Year-Round Out-Of-Home Respite: The goal is to strengthen the entire family by giving the care giver timely breaks and the family member with disabilities a chance to live in a supportive environment outside the home. Family care givers who are coping with the long term responsibility of looking after a relative with disabilities at home need relief. They can get periodic respite breaks for a day, a weekend, or week or longer, while their relative with disabilities is cared for at Camp Oakhurst.
Overnight respite is available each month throughout the year. Registered families receive a calendar of scheduled periods and can reserve time in advance so it can coincide with their plans for vacations, business trips or other events. It can also give family care givers important time to themselves or time to recuperate from an illness. Day recreation is only available to residents of Monmouth County. Time is arranged in advance to allow care givers the freedom to attend to family business or spend time alone. While attending a respite stay, the family member with disabilities lives among peers and has access to seasonal recreational activities, which include crafts, athletics, swimming, games and trips off-camp. Staff provide physical care and supervision 24 hours a day. Door-to-door or central site transportation may be available. Off-Season Vacations For Adults: The goal is to get a break from dull routine and isolation and have a vacation with friends.
Adults with disabilities who live alone or whose families are not eligible for respite need out-of-home social and recreational opportunities. This is especially true during the colder months when they have difficulty getting out to organized programs or visiting with friends in the city. An Off-Season Vacation at Camp Oakhurst gives disabled adults a chance to spend time with friends in an informal, barrier free environment. They can participate in adapted recreational activities and enjoy a country setting.
Vacation periods coincide with the agency's respite schedule for adults. Door-to-door or central site transportation may be available. There are very limited slots available in the Off-Season Vacation program. Staff plan activities and help with personal care, including dressing, bathing, feeding and transferring. They are on duty 24 hours a day.
